The 60th year of Indian independence was celebrated with gusto in Tumkur district and its various taluks on Wednesday.
Minister Incharge of District and Forests C Chennigappa hoisted the flag at the Mahatma Gandhi grounds, the centre of the district.
District in charge Minister C Chennigappa announced that efforts are on to acquire 3000 acres of land to establish new industries to provide employment to jobless. This is one of the several projects envisaged for the integrated development of the district, he said.
Special stress has been given to address the drinking water problem in the district and Rs 25 crore has been released for providing drinking water to rural areas he said.
Various cultural programmes presented by the children, parade by the Scouts, NCC attracted the attention of the spectators.
Mr Chennigappa hoisted the flag at 9 am and remembered the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.
“Our freedom fighters had dreamt of an united nation, that stood for peace and prosperity. Inorder to realise this dream they pledged their lives.
Today our country is progressing fast in this globalised world. Numerous freedom fighters, artists, intellectuals, scientists and faceless commoners have strove for the country to reach this stage,” he observed.
The government and the society have been striving hard to realise the dreams to make India, a progressive, peaceful and prosperous nation. We have achieved greater heights in several fields and have left an imprint for the world to reckon with. Ex-servicemen also took part in the march-past.
JD(S) office
The 60th Independence Day was celebrated at the JD(S) office by hoisting the flag. Party's city unit president B G Viajayprakash Mirji and other office bearers, workers participated in the programme.
Congress office
At Congress party office district Congress president Shafi Ahmed hoisted the tricolour. Former MP G S Basavaraju, former legislator R Narayan, party’s Women’s UNit president Sunanadamma participated. District Youth COngress president Guruprasad chaired the programme. Freedom fighter Narasimha Murthy and T R Revanna were felicitated on the occasion.
At Tumkur district Government Employees Association president of the association G M Sannamuddaiah hoisted the flag.
All the schools, colleges, government offices hoisted the flag to mark the 60th independence day. At Tumkur varsity vice-chancellor Dr O Ananatharamaiah hoisted the flag.
Varsity registrar T R Ranganath, prof K C Basappa and all the students participated in the celebrations.
Turuvekere
We should be grateful to the thousands of people who sacrificed their life and fought for the freedom of India, said Legislator M T Krishnappa.
Speaking at the Independence Day celebrations in Turuvekere, he said, the people now have to imbibe the values of the freedom fighters.
Students who scored highest marks in different examinations were felicitated on the occasion. Drug Control Board former president M H Narasimhaiah distributed mementos to the students.
