Though sowing of seeds has begun throughout the district, the farmers in the Sira taluk are facing severe shortage of sowing seeds. Thus, the government should immediately arrange for the distribution of seeds, said Rahul Gandhi Rural Development, Cultural and Sports Association President C R Umesh.
Legislator Dr G Parameshwar distributed free seeds and agricultural implements to 150 beneficiaries to mark his birthday celebrations.
The farmers instead of selling the seeds in open markets should sell it to the State Seeds Corporation, where they can get double the price for their seeds. Though the Sira taluk has received good rain this time it is facing severe shortage of seeds. The shortage of seeds has created anxiety among the farmer, he informed.
Last year 1,887 farmers had deposited Rs 6,64,167 as crop insurance amount covering their 9,123 hectare of land. However, against the background of severe crop loss the farmers had to be paid a sum of Rs 1,97, 33, 974 insurance amount. Thus, the government should take immediate action in this regard, he added.
