Traditional sarees
Sai Suja is having an exhibition and sale of Shyamala Ejji’s collection of traditional sarees from Tamil Nadu in a range of textures, colours and designs.
Shymala has worked closely with her aunt Parvathy Natesan who was, in the 60’s, inspired by Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay to recreate traditional Kalakshetra silk saree designs in cotton, when she decided not to wear silk sarees. Mubagam (three colour), Anja Limaje (five colours), Rail Thandadavala (rail track design), Athi Vazhapu (banana flower design) were designs woven in cotton and became quite the rage in Chennai leading to the establishment Rukku’s Boutique.
Shyamala has carried on her aunt’s tradition by way of recreating traditional designs and colours but extended her range to include cotton–silks , poly-cottons and poly–silks as well as dress fabrics.
The sale is on between the August 16 to 18, at ‘Kamalini’, # 37, Sri Bhooma, 17th Cross, Malleswaram. The sale is on from 11 am to 7.30 pm.
