A day of colour, culture
DH News Service, Bangalore:
As 117-year-old veteran freedom fighter Pandit Chaturvedi stood up to rekindle that spirit of patriotism, he had a message for the 500 plus children gathered to celebrate Indias 61st Independence Day at the Cubbon Park Bal Bhavan: "Be human, love all, and be proud to be an Indian."

It was now time to bridge the generation gap, the memory gap of six decades. Pandit Chaturvedi spent the next hour talking at length about the struggles he faced as a child during the freedom movement.

“Never lose heart amidst problems and struggles. Be optimistic and courageous while struggling  towards victory and freedom,” he advised the youngsters.

Fr Edward Thomas, executive Director, BOSCO, wondered aloud whether the children employed in the hotels and other working places had attained freedom.

“Let the society join with the government to to ensure freedom to every child and protect their rights” he said.
Master Kishan, child actor and director interacted with the children and encouraged them to work hard.  Painting competitions was conducted where children were asked to  colour their idea of freedom. The movie ‘Care of Footpath’ was screened for the children as part of the celebration which was followed by cultural events by the children of the BOSCO and Sarvodaya Foundation.

Tricolour dosas!

For the Bangalore Hotels Association, the I-Day was time ripe enough to break free, to add the three national colours to dosas, kesari baath, khaara baath and more. The eatables were prepared by the Srinidhi Sagar hotel staffers. To add more taste, another hotel had prepared a special Independence Day colour combination chutney.
Peace walk

Shedding rhetoric and cynicism, students and faculty of Bangalore's Icfai Business School (IBS) one of Bangalore's leading B-schools, participated in a Peace Walk on Friday, August 15, 2008, to commemorate Independence Day in their own unique way.

At the Indian Business School (IBS), over 1000 students, faculty and staff participated in a walk with the theme, Proud to be an Indian. With students from all corners of the country represented in the school, IBS students felt the walk was an ideal platform to spread the message of unity.

Cultural programme

The Kannada and Culture Department Presented a grand and colourful cultural programme.  Chief Minister B S Yedyurappa and Governor Rameshwar Thakur were present during the programme that was organised at the Ravindra Kalakshetra.

The programme began with patriotic songs by national poet Kuvempu, Bankim Chandra Chaterjee. Other songs by noted Kannada poets like K S Narasimhaswamy and R N Jayagopal were sung on this occasion. It was followed by several folk dances like Puja Kunitha, Dollu Kunitha and light music from several artisans who have come from various parts of the state.

Women’s dollu kunitha by Sujatha and troupe and Karadi Majjalu by a Bagalkot team were appreciated by the audience.
