An inscription throwing light into the history of Gangas have been unearthed at Herenallur in Kadur taluk.
The inscription dates back to eighth century. It has been discovered by Epigraphist H M Nagaraj Rao from Mysore and Advocate Harish Singatagere with the help of B N Jwalanappa and G R Harish. The inscription was unearthed during the renovation of Mallikarjuna temple.
The inscription mentions the title of Ganga ruler Sripurusha as ‘Prithvi Konguni Mahadhiraja Parameshwara Bhattara,’ who captured Asandinadu which was ruled by Nirgunda Mutharasa and his son Dunnamma.
Till now, it was believed that Dunnamma and his son Paramagula were the feudatories of Gangas. If Sripurusha who was also known as Nirgunda Muttarasa, as mentioned in the inscription, are the same person, then Dunnamma was none other than the son of Sripurusha.
The inscription also mentions the titles of ‘Arivallaba’ and ‘Vallavarasa’ to Sripurusha. If the other parts of the inscription is available, it can throw more light into the the period.
