Biranchi Das, the coach-cum-mentor of kid marathoner Budhia Singh was granted bail on Thursday evening in the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) here. The bail was sanctioned after Das furnished a surety and Rs 5,000 as per the directive of the court. However, despite having the bail, the jailed coach could not be released from the Jharpada prison here in view of a second case which will be heard in the same court on Friday.

The second case is nothing to do with Budhia and relates to a separate alleged outraging of modesty incident.

Das was arrested by the Bhubaneswar police on August 13 after Budhia’s mother Sukanti Singh registered a complaint with the police alleging that her son was being physically tortured the coach.  The coach was sent to Jharpada prison.
