Villagers and political leaders from all parties held a protest in front of Kunigal police station, following alleged atrocities by police when they went to arrest the accused in connection with a complaint of vulgar SMS messages sent by few youth to a young woman. The altercation occurred when a PSI was assaulted when he tried to arrest the accused.
A young woman from Janata colony, Huliyurdurga was getting indecent SMS messages since a month. Being extremely disturbed she, along with her brother, based on the phone numbers managed to find the addresses of the youths who were sending such messages and went to lodge a complaint with Huliyurdurga police. She also told the police that if action was not taken against the culprits she would go to Women’s Commission and police higher ups. An alarmed PSI Rangaswamy registered the complaint and located Manjunath, Papegowda, Hemaraju and Nagaraju from Doddamavattur, Chikkamavattur and Madappanahalli, who were sending the messages.
On Friday at around 8.30 pm, he went to Doddamavattur and as he was inquiring about Manjunath, Ramanna, Manjunath’s father got into an argument with him and assaulted him tearing away his uniform, hindering him from carrying out his duty. A case has been booked in Huliyurdurga police station against Ramanna and others. PSI Rangaswamy arrived along with additional staff at 12 am and arrested Ramanna, Chandrashekhar, Manja and Krishnappa. However, the villagers alleged that the police team that arrived late at night assaulted women, children and aged and also damaged property. Several of them are admitted into Kunigal hospital.

On Saturday morning, a protest was held by the villagers and supported by Tumkur MIlk Federation Chairman D Krishnakumar, YKR Fans association patron Anasuyamma, Singri Gowda, Annapurnamma, Congress leaders B B Ramaswamy Gowda, Kunigal Town BJP president K K Ramesh, BJP leader B M Hucchegowda, Samata Mahila Vedike president Gayatri Raju and others.
Peace meet
DySP T V Prabhakar and CPI Balarame Gowda visited Doddamavattur village and held a peace meet of leaders and villagers, and the young woman. Additional SP Ananatharamu arrived on the scene and suggested to the villagers to register separate complaints against the police atrocities.
After he assured release of the accused and arrested the youths who were sending the messages and produced before the court, the protesters dispersed.
