Varsity council nod to close Kundapur college

Mangalore University Academic Council members agreed to close down Dr B B Hegde College, Kundapur from the academic year 2007-08.
The decision was taken at the Academic Council meeting held under the presidentship of Vice-Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa on Saturday.
The decision was taken following a letter written by the Managing Trustee of the College to the University dated July 30. The administrative board of the College had decided to close down the college and to hand over the College building to its owner. The meeting also decided to accommodate the students in Bhandarkar’s College, Kundapur.
Meanwhile, the three years diploma in Home Science offered by the Gujrath Technical Examination Board was made equivalent to the PU courses offered by the Karnataka government at the meeting. 
The Council also agreed to provide affiliation to Sahyadri College of Education to start BEd college, revision of syllabus of medicinal plant biotechnology for BSc degree, revised syllabi of Earth Science and Resource Management, MSc Hospital Management, English syllabus for BSc (FND) etc.
Dept of Social Work
The Council approved the statute governing the establishment of post-graduate department of Social Work in Mangalore University. The statute will come into effect from the date of the assent of the Chancellor.
Dty Finance Officer
The members also approved the statute governing the institution of the post of Deputy Finance Officer in Mangalore University.
The statute will be sent to the Chancellor for approval. As per the statute, the qualification for the Deputy Finance Officer should be a master’s degree from a recognised university and an administrative experience of atleast five years as Assistant Registrar or equivalent cadres in the University.
Autonomous colleges
VC Prof K M Kaveriappa clarified that autonomy for the colleges are only for academic purpose. Whatever rules and regulations University forms will be common to all including autonomous colleges.
He said students will be representing Mangalore University in the inter-university competitions and not as a student of autonomous colleges. He also informed that a meeting of all the autonomous College principals and deans will be held soon to discuss on the powers of autonomous colleges and form certain rules and regulations.
Prof Kaveriappa also informed that University has nominated its members to the governing bodies, board of studies and finance committee of the autonomous colleges.
Approved
The University Chancellor has approved the statute governing the appointment, terms of office, emoluments, conditions of service, powers and functions of the Director if Students Welfare in Mangalore University.
MLCs Prathapchandra Shetty, Capt Ganesh Karnik, Registrar Dr Sundar Naik among others were present.
