Various organisations have opposed the proposed Mica and China clay mining at Kalmakki in Kalasa and have threatened to intensify their protest.
Malnad Hitharakshana Samithi members said all the preparations have been made to undertake mining at Teremare. If the mining is undertaken, it will affect nearly 400 families in Kalmakki, Jenugoodu, Kallata, Hinari, Kachagane. It will also affect the water in Jenugoodu stream, Bedakki stream, Hinari stream and Nellikere stream. Thousands of families depend on these streams for the agricultural activities.
They said hundreds of acres fields will be filled with dust owing to the mining at Shankarakallu, Olabailu, Beedimane, Edadalu, Bedakki, Konebailu regions. Since the Bhadra river is just one kilometre from the proposed mining site, it is sure that all the silt from the mining will be filled in the river during monsoon, they added. If this proposed project of mica and china clay mining takes off then one can see the unimaginable happening to the people, flora, faun and the climate in this region.
