Superstar Amitabh Bachchan, fresh from winning the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in “Black”, is all set to dazzle cinegoers with his first full-length English feature film.
The film, “The Last Lear” by acclaimed Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh and based on the late Utpal Dutt’s famous play “Ajker Shahjahan” (Today’s Shahjahan), will have its world premiere at the forthcoming Toronto International Film Festival.
Produced by Planman Motion Pictures, which in recent times has made films like Ghosh’s “Dosar” (Bengali) and “Sunglass” (Bengali/Hindi) and Rajat Kapoor’s “Mithya – The Imposter Who Wasn’t” (Hindi), the film also stars Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Shefali Shah. “The Last Lear”, in which Bachchan plays an ageing actor, will have a gala premiere, which is reportedly the most prestigious section and centerpiece of the prominent festival, on September nine.
Bachchan and Ghosh will walk the red carpet along with Planman’s Arindam Chaudhuri and Planman Motion Pictures CEO Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee prior to the premiere.
“The Last Lear’ is indeed a very important and powerful film.
The story, Rituparno Ghosh’s direction and the performances are all world class. I am sure this film will be appreciated as much by the world audience as by the Indians,” Mr Chaudhuri said.
Shot extensively outdoors around Kolkata and in Mussoorie, the film, according the Bhattacharjee, has a powerful subject mounted and styled in a way that it would appeal to the global audience.
