‘Computers can’t replace teachers,’ the house announced unanimously, concluding the eighth Inter Institutional L N Birla National Debate (Bangalore Chapter) on the topic- Computers will replace teachers.
Rotary Bangalore Midtown, in association with Birla High School, Kolkata, organised the debate for students of Classes XI and XII and undergraduate courses on August 20 in Bangalore. Two colleges and 15 schools participated in this event.
Stuti Subbhai of Mallya Aditi International School was declared as the best speaker in the school category and Prachi Arya of Mount Carmel College in the college category.
Invoking ideas
Teaching means invoking ideas and creativity and not just stuffing the students with information, said Stuti.
However, Nikhil of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School countered it a nd said teachers’ knowledge can be limited but not computer’s.
Computer can’t be biased, tired or impatient, he added.
Best team
Bishop Cotton Boys’ School was announced as the best school team and Mount Carmel College as the Best College Team.
Out-of-the-box
The enthusiasm and out-of-the-box thinking of the students was amazing, said chairperson of the event, Chitra Bhaskar, Programme Facilitator, Birla High School, Kolkata. If more students participated then it would be more challenging. But the overall quality was really good, she added. The winners received mementoes and certificates from Rotary.
The best speakers of all the city chapters will participate in the final round of the national debate to be held in Kolkata in November.
