A Parliamentary Committee has strongly recommended that no further Special Economic Zones (SEZ) should be notified till the SEZ Act and rules have been amended to meet the public concern. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce feels that the undue haste in approving SEZ proposals and the consequent proliferation of SEZs have caused resistance to the SEZ policy.
The opposition which the SEZs have met during the last one year, must compel the government to take a fresh look at the policy and to re-frame, the Committee said, in its report tabled in Parliament on Monday.
If urbanisation is not suitably executed, it may threaten food security, the Committee warned and therby recommended the government to take necessary measures to ensure food security.
The Committee reiterated that SEZs, therefore, should not be established at the cost of farmers.
