The institute will provide three year training in four automobile related trades — Automobile assembly, automobile paint, automobile weld and mechatronics.
Free of tution fee, all students admitted will be get a stipend of Rs 1,800, Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,200 per month respectively in the first, second and third year of training.
An annual fellowship ranging from Rs 7,000-9,000 per annum, will also be awared based on examination perfomance and discipline matters, institute Principal T Somanath said. The admission is open to rural school students (only boys) from Karnataka, who has passed their tenth standard / SSLC with minimum 50 per cent marks in Maths & Science, and overall aggregate of 50 per cent and above. The minimum age limit is 15-18 years.
Boarding and lodging will be provided by the insitut e but Rs 1,500 will be deducted from the stipend of each student.
Set up at a cost of Rs 22 crore, the institute has selected its first batch of 64 students and classes have begun from August 1, 2007. A team of 25 staff, will train the students.
Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President Mitsuo Kinoshita said the purpose of the institute was to offer an opportunity to help students, unable to pursue higher education due to economic reasons, acquire special skills in manufacturing.
Japanese Ambassador Yasukuni Enoki said these type of initiatives will further strengthen the trade ties between the two countries.
