Col Vasanth V, the Commanding Officer of 9 Maratha Light Infantry who was killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir was cremated with full military honours at the Kalpalli Crematorium on Wednesday.
The mortal remains of the officer were carried by senior Army officers after which the national flag was placed on his body.
A group of soldiers drawn from the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre fired three times in the air and reversed their arms as a mark of respect.
Silence
The bugle sounded the Last Post, calling for two minutes of silence to be observed.
Col Vasanth’s wife and children payed floral tributes, while the rest of the family were also present.
Former Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, Minister for Heath R Ashok and MP Tejaswini Ramesh also paid their respects to the departed officer. Wreaths were laid on behalf of Chiefs of the Army, General Officer Commanding-in Chief, Headquarters Southern Command, GOC ATNK & K area.

Brigadier Clement Samuel, Commander of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, Commandant MLIRC, Belgaum, Commandant MEG and Centre, Commandant CMP Centre and School, Commandant Parachute Regiment, Commandant Service Selection Centre, Commandant 106 Infantry Battalion, Commandant ASC Centre and College, Commandant Pioneer Corps Training Centre, Senior Officers of the police, senior retired officers of the Army including Chairman and MD of Deccan Airways Captain Gopinath paid floral tributes.
The body was earlier kept at family’s residence in Madhav Nagar, where members of the Armed forces, serving and retired came in large numbers to pay their respects.
