Detailing out how Col Vasanth fought, a defence spokesman said, the commanding officer of 9 Maratha Light Infantry personally organised his command and ensured that every gap in the rugged and inaccessible terrain was covered with surveillance devices and his troops were deployed to counter any attempt of the Pakistan aided militants to infiltrate through the LoC.
In the early hours of Monday, his troops deployed in the area ahead of Ghoretal, spotted militants who infiltrated from the other side of LoC. Col Vasanth personally took command of troops and moved swiftly to cut off the movement of the infiltrators. He successfully intercepted and fired upon the militants who hid in the dense undergrowth. Col Vasanth, leading from the front, organised his troops to surround the militants who were estimated to be eight in number.
Fierce fire fight
A fierce fire fight started during which Col Vasanth, along with his radio operator Lance Naik Bachhan Shashikant Ganpath, slowly moved forward towards the militants.
During the wee hours of Tuesday, Col Vasanth, wanting to take advantage of the twilight, rallied his men to move forward towards the militants who had taken position in a vantage point. Outflanking the militant position, Col Vasanth, started engaging the militant position with accurate fire. The Bangalorean killed a militant but was himself injured when another group of militants opened fire on him. Regardless of his injuries and fire that was coming from two side, Col Vasanth kept engaging the militants and gradually moved forward. His radio operator was then injured while trying to transmit a message for move of reinforcements. On closing in with the group, in which there were two militants left, he charged the position killing a militant. In the meanwhile, the second militant fired a burst which brought down Col Vasanth. In a last action before loosing consciousness Col Vasanth fired at the militant and killed him.
