Minister for Water Resource K S Eshwarappa has assured of beginning work related to Tunga lift irrigation project by next 4 months.
Speaking after kickstarting the re-survey of the proposed Tunga lift irrigation project at the premises of Shiva temple at Harakere village on Tuesday, he informed that survey work has been assigned to a private company and will be completed within a month.
The project is expected to cost Rs 24.12 crore and will irrigate 8,689 acre land in Shimoga and Davangere districts. 1.42 tmc water from Tunga river will be used in the project. The project will feed Hayhole and Gowdanakere tanks which will benefit the farmers in command area of these tanks. Though Barehalla has been excluded from the project but will be included in the later phase. Talks will be held with Forest Department in this regard, he stated.
MLA Haratalu Halappa who presided over the programme demanded water for Puradal and Doddamarasalakere tanks in the project. Since the farmers in dry areas will benefit from the project, politicians should cooperate in the implementation of the same, he urged.
Zilla Panchayat President Sharada Pooryanaik, members Tejappa, Shantaveera Naik, Chief Engineer Siddagangappa, Executive Engineer Kshetrapal were present in the programme.
