Madikeri Rural Police arrested a person on Tuesday who broke open the Home Stay room, which was occupied by foreigners and stole Rs 25,000 in cash, their ATM card, Visa, air tickets and commodities worth Rs 1,000.
Hamsa (62), a resident of Maldare near Siddapura on August 17 gained entry into the room of Emma Elizabeth Oberg and David Robert, residents of London who were staying at Shanthi Stay home at Murnadu in Madikeri and stole away the valuables and cash from the room.
Rural division Circle Inspector Suresh Babu said that Hamsa frequently visits his daughter who resides close to the stay home and during such a visit must have kept an eye on the foreign tourists.
He broke open the door of the room on Aug 17 when the foreigner couple left the room for dinner.
Three cameras, Rs 25,000 in cash, Visa, Passport, air tickets, ATM card, clothes and a bag of other commodities were stolen by Hamsa, who later kept the cash and valuables and burnt off things which were of little use to him.
The police could recover three cameras, Rs 13,020, computer memory card and other things.
After arresting the culprit, the foreigner couple who were in Mysore were asked to collect their recovered commodities.
Mr David Roberts speaking to the reporters said that on the basis FIR filed in the police station, he would be contacting the United Kingdom Embassy in Delhi to get back the air tickets.
Ms Emma Elizabeth is an American native who is pursuing her Medical education while David is a law graduate who were in India for a month long holiday. they will be returning to London on August 28.
The accused has committed similar thefts earlier and was wanted by the police for over 5 such cases registered at the station.
