No favours to stars: Dunga
Ronaldinho and Kaka will have to win back their places in the Brazil team after skipping the Copa America, coach Dunga has said. Dunga said the pair would not be getting any special treatment and that the players who took part in the tournament in Venezuela had a head start in the race for places in the team. Brazil won the Copa America, beating arch-rivals Argentina in the final.
Junior spikers lose to Argentina
The Indian Junior spikers’ winning streak in the Boys’ Youth World Championship came to sudden halt when they lost 1-3 to Argentina in the second round of the tournament, reports UNI from New Delhi.
India started procedings well, pocketing the first set 39-37, but that was all they could manage as Argentina clinched the next three sets 21-25, 22-25, 21-25 to seal the tie in their favour in one hour and five minutes.
For India, Mandeep Singh was the best scorer with 22 points.
Olsson pulls out of World meet
Olympic triple jump gold medallist Christian Olsson has pulled out of the World Athletics Championships through injury, organisers said on Tuesday, reports Reuters from Osaka.
The Swede aggravated an injury to his left hamstring during training in Japan on Monday for the Aug 25-Sept 2 meet in Osaka.
“I just felt something go in the back of the thigh,” the 27-year-old said. “It feels very heavy now but I've been through many injuries before and I will come back.” Olsson, who also missed the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, tore his hamstring during the Golden League meeting in Rome last month.
Jaffer to miss Karachi tie
Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer will miss Mumbai's match against Pakistan national champions Karachi Urban next month due to a knee injury, a cricket official said on Tuesday, reports Reuters from Karachi.
The opener was to have led the Indian domestic champions in the annual four-day Mohammad Nasser Trophy from Sept 8 against hosts Karachi, winners of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy last season.
Jaffer, 29, has been advised to take six weeks rest but is expected to be fit for the home Test series against Pakistan starting in November.
Heidfeld, Kubica stay with Sauber
Germany's Nick Heidfeld and Poland's Robert Kubica will continue as BMW Sauber drivers next year, the Formula One team said on Tuesday, reports Reuters from London.
“Both Nick and Robert have delivered very strong performances in the course of this season,” said team boss Mario Theissen in a statement before this weekend's Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul.
“They have played a decisive role in enabling the BMW Sauber F-1 team to firmly establish itself as the third best team in Formula One.”
Heidfeld, 30, and Kubica, 22, have scored 71 points between them this season, with BMW now 38 points clear of fourth-placed Renault in the constructors' championship.
Heidfeld is fifth in the drivers' standings with 42 points.
Salas receives Chile call-up
Chile striker Marcelo Salas received a surprise call-up for next month's European tour after nearly two years out of the national team, reports Reuters from Santiago.
Salas, 32, was one of 13 home-based players named by new coach Marcelo Bielsa for the matches against Switzerland and Austria.
