They might have left Karnataka in search of greener pastures, but the likes of Pramila Aiyappa, Sahana Kumari and Arun D’Souza will still add a competitive edge to the State Junior and Senior athletic championships, beginning at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Wednesday.
Long jumper Pramila and high jump champion Sahana had shifted allegiance to Jharkhand, while D’Souza switched over to Andhra Pradesh, seeking better financial incentives. However, they will be allowed to compete in the State meet, Karnataka Athletic Association Secretary Satyanarayana told a press conference on Tuesday.
“They are all employed here in Bangalore, and they will be representing their employers. Their participation will raise the level of competition. Hence, we have decided to give them entries,” explained Satyanarayana.
The meet, which will also serve as the trials to select the State teams in Junior and Senior categories, has attracted about 1,600 entries and is being sponsored by Syndicate Bank. As has been the case over the last few years, a strong contingent of junior athletes from Sri Lanka will also be taking part.
As per Athletics Federation of India guidelines, an athlete will be allowed to take part in only two events, apart from the relays.
Also, the team championship will be awarded to the unit with the highest number of gold medals, instead of points.
