Johny of India secured the 81kg gold medal, beating compatriot Rupesh More in a lop-sided final in the Asian Muay Thai Championship which concluded at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Tuesday.
In a bout where the Indian supporters were divided in their loyalty, Mizoram boy Johny landed a couple of right hooks on the Mumbai lad after a hesitant start in the opening round. In the next round, Rupesh rode on quick reflexes to avoid some kicks but after a brief period of caution, Johny stamped his authority with a straight punch on Rupesh’s face.
The penultimate round was a statement of supremacy by Johny as he handed his rival at least half a dozen punches. In the final round, Rupesh looked tired and was knocked down by the confident Johny. The former ca-me back on his legs quickly but another punch on the face had Rupesh in the floor again.
The referee then stopped the contest in favour of Johny.
India clinched their sixth and final gold in the event when Mohammad Riyaz Khan was awarded a walkover in the final against Sri Lankan Manjula Premakumara.
In the final bout of the event, Iran’s Mohammad made short work of Amit Kumar and bagged gold in the heavyweight (86 kg) category.
The towering Iranian caught the local favourite unawares with an acrobatic kick on the chest followed by a flying hook right on the face. Amit couldn’t recover from those blows and surrendered meekly in the second round as the referee stopped the contest on outclass basis, giving Iran’s third gold on the day.
