Wipro Infotech launched a new desktop PC — Protos in July 2007, a palm-size, fully functional smallest desktop available. It helps to take care of day-to-day computing needs, as simple as writing documents, making animated presentations, browsing the internet or watching videos.
Protos PC is powered by AMD Geode Processor and chipset that operates at 500 MHz, 40 GB hard disk upgradable upto 80 GB. Additionally it has four USB ports with in-built ethernet, audio and speaker support.
It is dust-proof, has no fan and can withstand temperatures upto 40 to 45 degree celsius making it rugged enough to suit different conditions. Protos PC comes in different colours black, pink, green appealing to users in varied segments.
The Protos PC is an innovative design model trying to break the myth of space and AC requirements for a PC set up. It is targetted at small businesses, households, rural education, educational set ups, chemistry labs et al and runs on 12V DC. When connected to a UPS it has eight times more back-up time not requiring air conditioning.
“We are bullish on the Protos PC, looking to create new markets. It is not positioned to replace the existing PCs, but aimed at newer applications and usage,” said AMD India Managing Director Alok Ohrie.
The price of Protos PC starts from a minimum of Rs 14,000 and can go up depending on added accessories, Wipro Infotech Vice President Personal Computing Division Ashutosh Vaidya said.
