Workers of various political parties of Tharikere staged a protest on Wednesday in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office opposing the construction of a tunnel in the name of Upper Bhadra project.
The protest was held under the aegis of Negila Yogi Rakshana Balaga and then a memorandum was submitted to Head Quarter Assistant to Deputy Commissioner demanding to drop the unscientific plan of digging out a tunnel. They urged that Tharikere taluk must be given first priority for using the Hebbe Halla water, which originates in the taluk itself.
“We are not opposing the Upper Bhadra project because it is being done for a good purpose of providing water to plains in the state. But in the name of the project, we will not allow them to dig tunnel in this region as this will reduce the under ground water level throwing farmers into dire straits,” said Balaga honorary president N Raju demanding that K C Reddy report must be re-looked and alternate for the proposed tunnel must be found.
Tharikere Taluk BJP Yuva Morcha president T M Bhojaraj, Balaga president Doranalu Suresh, CPI leader Vedamurthy and others were present on the occasion.
