Dalits, progressive groups take to streets

 Mysore woke up to series of protests on Wednesday morning. First it was anti-Chamalapura protests on the outskirts of the city that left three persons seriously injured. Members of ODP - Mahilodaya Mahila Okkuta went on dharna against the proposed Chamalapura power plant and culminated in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office.
On the other hand, it was Progressive groups that went on demonstration owing to the attack on writer Taslima Nasreen in Hyderbad recently.
Renowned writers G H Nayak and K N Shivateerthan of Federion of Progressive Groups led the protest.
 Demanding the arrest of Taslima’s attackers, the writers said they had behaved like criminals and were justifying it in the name of their community. Muddukrishna, Meera Naik, Padma Shriram and Jagannath were present.
Memorandum
They submitted a memorandum on the ocassion to Deputy Commissioner demanding protection for Taslima. DC promised to send the letter to Andhra governor.
Dalits
Karnataka Dalita Sangharsha Samithi sat on dharna in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office seeking protection, educational and economical progress of Dalits. They said cases of exploitation of Dalits were not taken too seriously by authorities.
Harassed
“Dalits eke out lives by growing vegetables are being harassed in Jayanagar. The community needs new hostels to accomodate 500 members. Chikkahadyanahalli Dalits need houses. Our community members in Devarasanahalli and Kolaghatta need lands for graveyards. Authorities have not paid any attention to our pleas,” they said.
