Indias Grandiose of the royal past
Smita Balram Kumar

If you dig tradition, heritage and the opulence of the bygone Mughal era, here is an opportunity to indulge in grandeur. Hyderabad-based designer, Aruna Pathreekar is back in town with her latest line of stunning jewellery from the house of Nizams.
Titled Mughal Magic, Arunaa’s repertoire goes from period designs to contemporary. The collection has a great number of pieces singular in nature like the jugni, bajuband, jadaau anklets and both ethnic and modern kadaas. Earrings are aplenty that vary from pretty chaand-baalis to long earrings. Aruna’s jewellery has travelled the world and one cannot help but appreciate her studied knowledge of India’s ruling dynasties that effectively translates into her collection.
In today's’ day and age of minimalistic corporate jewellery, does traditional opulent jewellery still hold interest? “I do both traditional and contemporary designs. Interestingly, both are equally popular in Bangalore. For day-wear, people use the light jewellery. But traditional jewellery is still attractive for weddings and evening wear,” replies Aruna, attributing the equal demand on the cosmopolitan nature of the City.
Navratan line
The festive season is about to kick off with Rakshabandhan round the corner and Aruna has designed an entire collection of Navratan jewellery for the occasion. The line comprises bejewelled payals, exquisite kadaas, jhumkaas and chaand-baalis. Those craving for pure indulgence, there are many necklace and earring sets flaunting the nine gems. Talking about the popularity of Navratan jewellery, Aruna says, “It’s timeless. It’s one of the best styles in jewellery design. Navratan jewellery is so elegant that it will always be popular across India.”
Each piece has been handcrafted by skilled karigars who have experience to boast of. The entire collection has been created using gold-plated sterling silver, embedded with semi-precious stones like zircons, rubies, emeralds and kundan among others. Hailing from the City of Pearls, how can one miss the purest form of feminine charm! Aruna’s collection also has fine quality pearls strung in necklaces or embedded in earrings.
Aruna’s collection of jewels are priced at Rs 2000 onwards. This jewellery collection will be on display at ffolio, Vittal Mallya Road from August 23 to 25.
