Sahana Kumari cleared a height of 1.80 metres to set a new record in women’s high jump on the opening day of the State Senior and Junior athletic championships which got under way here at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Wednesday.
In the process, Sahana, representing South Western Railway, broke her own record of 1.78 metres created four years ago.
SAI’s Kavya Muthanna came second with an effort of 1.74M. However, later in the day, Kavya equalled Sahana’s record in the girls’ U-20 category with an identical effort.
Former national record holder Pramila Aiyappa won the long jump gold by leaping to a distance of 6.06 metres. The closest anyone got to her was Indo-German Sports Club’s GM Aishwarya, who finished second with a clearance of 5.71 metres.
MEG’s Jeneesh P Haridas won the men’s high jump, with an effort of 1.95 metres.
Sri Lankan athletes, who added glitter to the meet, put in their best efforts despite their achievements being of little more than academic interest.
Three finals slated for the evening had to be postponed to the morrow due to a heavy downpour.

ATHLETE INJURED
Prakash’s right leg broken
Bangalore, DHNS: The State senior and junior athletic meet got off to an inauspicious start with Alva’s Sports Club Moodbidre’s Prakash breaking his right leg in a fall during the 800M event.
Prakash collided with one of his rivals and crashed heavily, hitting his leg against the trackside curb.
He was taken to the nearby Mallya hospital and later underwent a surgery, according to KAA secretary Satyanarayana.
The incident brought to light the lack of medical facilities at the venue, something the KAA need to focus on in the coming days.
