The impression was that Ramu kaka would be best suited to make a film on the Indian version of voodoo, better known as kala jadoo, considering his magic touch to the earlier film Bhoot.
Besides Phoonk was expected to give Hindi cinegoers a chilling effect they haven’t had in a long time.
But to our disappointment nothing as such happens. Instead half of the film goes on trying to scare you in every frame without anything happening actually. At some point of time you feel that you’re watching a comedy show as you laugh with one of the characters.
The film revolves around a hardcore atheist contractor Rajiv (Sudeep) and his family who have views opposite to him. He does not believe in God nor in the so-called dark forces. But after throwing out his two employees on charges of fraud he begins to have nightmares.
Even when his daughter Raksha (Ahsaas) is believed to have been possessed by an evil spirit, Rajiv tries to rubbish his wife and mothers’ fear.
However, when doctors and a psychiatrist fails to cure Raksha, Rajiv seeks the help of another ‘extra being’ who eventfully knew every details about kala jadoo and how to counter it!
Despite the attempt to tell an evergreen story of conflict between religious fanaticism and science in our day to day life Phoonk fails to get your adrenalin pumping.
However, there are some brilliant camera moves and lots of close-up shots revealing the actors fine arts in acting.
Instead of spending two hours in theatre and still remain causeless as to what a horror film is, you may prefer sitting in front of a 24-hours news channel and get all the really horrific incidents to get your goose bumps.
