The Bangalore University Academic Council on Thursday decided not to implement the multiple choice questions (MCQs) model for the undergraduate courses for the year 2008.
Vice-Chancellor Prof H A Ranganath, presiding over a Council meeting, cited the lack of preparation by the university and the Board of Studies (BoS) as the reason for the withdrawal of the proposal.
“The preparation failed to meet the required expectation and hence the proposal will not be implemented in the next academic year. Only after proper preparation, the MCQs model would be introduced,’’ he said. The suggestions made by the Task Force Committee represented by principals, Teachers’ Association and members of the MCQ cell include conducting of workshop for each subject to facilitate the teachers concerned.
Moreover, chairpersons of BoS (UG) needed more time to discuss the nature of the MCQs model before its implementation. Last year, the university had decided to introduce the MCQs model for the even semesters — II, IV and VI. However, this was exempted for languages. The odd semesters — I, III and V— will continue with classical type question papers (comprehensive, essay and precise type questions). Courses like LL B, BE and B Ed were exempted from MCQs, as national bodies to monitor them. In such cases, the examination reforms can be taken up only after obtaining the approval of the national bodies. The distance education course offered by the university will continue to be in the classical mode.
