Though making the way for a cosy cuppa tea, the monsoon and after, brings with it problems like gloominess and muck into ones home.
Hema Anand gives a few simple tips to make the ambience cheery.
The heavy showers may seem very romantic for a song sequence in Hindi movies or maybe the best time to snuggle up indoors and enjoy a hot cup of tea, but these showers may also bring loads of problems along with them.
Firstly, the weather seems overcast, wet and gloomy, which makes your home look dull and uninspiring. The sun also does not shine brightly making the atmosphere more chilly. So there needs to be a little makeover to make your home look bright and cozy and boost up your spirits to enjoy the monsoon.
Change the dull and dark coloured curtains and replace them with colourful and eye-catching printed curtains in shades of yellow, bright pinks or greens. This will instantly bring a bright look and reduce the gloominess of the weather. Place lots of brightly coloured cushions on your sofas or divans. Light up your home with some beautiful lampshades. The yellow light will bring warmth and reduce the chill in the weather. Cover the floor with some colourful carpets or dhurries. These add a touch of class and lavishness to the décor and also make it more comfortable to walk on the floor as it tends to become very cold in this season, specially if it is a marble floor.
Get rid of the mess
The house also tends to become very messy in the rainy season as we bring in lot of mud when we enter the house with our shoes on. Most of the times the shoes are wet which make the place all sticky and wet. To prevent this get a stylish footwear stand and place it at a convenient place just outside the house so that everyone can remove their shoes and place it on the stand before entering the house. The shoes can be later cleaned and dried and brought into the house. It is also a good idea to place an attractive plastic box or a small plastic bucket at the door so that everyone can put the wet umbrellas into it before entering the house. A few hooks can also be fixed somewhere in an airy place outside the house, to hang the wet raincoats, etc. Place rubber or jute door mats at the entrance and at several places in the house.
You also need to take care of your furniture. Wood shrinks and expands with changes in humidity levels. Excessive humidity can harm your expensive furniture and extreme changes in humidity can lead to warping and growth of mould.
Wood may also be attacked by insects. Protect it by applying a good coat of moisture resistant varnish. Also make sure not to place the wooden furniture close to the windows. Wooden doors and hinges tend to get stuck during this season due to the moisture in the air. Grease them well to keep them functioning properly.
It is better to use bedsheets and towels made of thin material in the monsoons, as drying of clothes becomes very difficult in this season. You could also fix a clothesline at an airy place like the balcony or utility area inside the house. Open up the windows, specially when the sun peeps out to remove any stuffy of misty smell in the house.
