Healthy eating rather than dieting is the new weight loss mantra, explains nutritionist Madhavi Bhatt-Trivedi
Many of us who want to lose weight find it difficult to get started on a weight loss programme that is simple and easy-to-follow. Losing weight by 'dieting', 'starving', swapping and changing to different diets is not the best way; we need to find a special way of reducing energy content from the normal foods we eat every day. We need to learn certain food rules to help form better eating habits and help us kickstart into a healthier lifestyle.
We should learn to pick out certain foods like whole grain cereals from our normal daily diet and use them to form the basis for our new healthy eating habits. This gives familiarity to the special way of eating rather than the idea that the individual is 'on a diet'. Trying to lose weight by 'eating less' and 'skipping meals' relays the message that it will end some day. When a 'diet' ends many people gain back most, if not all the weight lost. To help you kick-start into a healthy weight loss programme, here are some special tips:
Try not to have too much variety of food for each meal. Many single food/meal weight loss diets have been based on this principle. This is because we usually consume more food and calories when there is more choice on offer. For example, at a buffet style meal where its "eat all you can" no matter how much we eat there always seems to be room for one more item!
It may become easier to get on a special weight management program by not having too much variety. Transition to a low-fat healthy well-balanced diet and lower amount of choice for each meal by eating regular small meals coupled with exercise will keep the momentum going. Be careful what you add to healthy foods. Whole grain cereals, salads and fruits are some of the best foods for losing weight; they are very popular with many people who want to kickstart into a healthy weight loss programme. The idea is to use these foods in a way that they promote weight loss. Salads should be eaten without high-fat dressings. They can be seasoned with lemon, herbs etc. Fruits too are better eaten whole rather than as juice. The idea is when choosing the special foods to help lose weight try not to neutralise the food's possible weight loss benefits and be careful with what you add!
Eat vegetables and fruits for snacks. For most dieters it is those in between hunger pangs that are the most frustrating. Fruits and vegetables are the best bet to feel full as they are low in calories and provide plenty of energetic vitamins and minerals.
Eat healthy and remain active. Aerobic exercise like simple walking for at least 30 minutes a day will help you to lose your body fat while maintaining the muscle. Exercise helps speed up your metabolism which in turn helps you to burn more calories.
Begin by losing small amounts of weight. Gradual weight loss of about 2.5 kilos in 2 weeks will also help you to kick-start into a healthy life-style.
