The retired DGP and BJP MP from Bangalore North Dr H T Sangliana was quick enough in funding 15 bus shelters across the City under his MPLAD scheme last year but little was he aware that five of them have not been constructed yet.
In fact, the local authorities had ‘guided’ him that all the bus shelters have been constructed, while the realities were different. Now, Kalidasa Reddy of his constituency has taken up the matter under the Right To Information (RTI) Act. On his initiative, the Karnataka Information Commission has ordered spot inspection by a special team.
The team comprising assistant commissioner of the Bangalore North sub-division, executive engineer PRE division, traffic police officers of the area and the deputy commissioner of BBMP would visit all the five bus shelters, on Monday, for a reality check.
The complainant Kalidasa Reddy said the project of bus shelters at 15 places was sanctioned in January last year and was to be completed by July 2006 but till now the bus shelters have been constructed only at 10 places while, at five places it has not been constructed yet.
He added that each bus shelter was to built at a cost of Rs 1.9 lakh.
Resistance
Under RTI, Reddy had asked the district officials why the bus shelters at 5 places- Ulsoor, Binnamangala, Indiranagara Stage-1, Kensington Town and Old Madras Road- were not constructed, he was told that there was resistance from the shop owners with regard to setting up bus shelters in front of their shops.
He then complained to the KIC statinging that these statements are totally false and misleading as there are no such commercial establishments in the proposed areas.
Following his complaint, the KIC directed the district administration to form a special team and inspect the spot. It also ordered to take Mr Kalidasa with them.
BJP MP Dr Sangliana was surprised to learn that five bus shelters have not been constructed yet. “I was told that all the fifteen bus shelters have been constructed, so I was under the impression that the work is over. I am surprised when you are telling me that spot inspection of the five bus shelters would take place on Monday,” said Dr Sangliana.
