While film-star Salman Khan will have to spend five years in jail for having killed a black buck, there is no dearth of known and not-so-known personalities in Madhya Pradesh who have hunted in the jungles of the state — once full of tigers and other big game.
And there is evidence to suggest including the fall in the number of tigers — that the hunting continues unhindered.
Those who are known for their passion for killing animals in the wild include Nawab Pataudi, the father of film-star Saif Ali Khan, at least three former chief secretaries of the state and a host of IAS and IPS officials and other big-wigs.
Old-timers recall that Pataudi used to frequently hunt tigers in the state and on more than one occasion was accompanied by Shammi Kapoor of the Yahoo fame. Former state governor GN Singh, former chief secretary M S Singhdeo who came from a royal family of what is now Chhattisgarh and another former chief secretary M S Chaudhary were among avid hunters.
About two years back, the skins of six deer and one panther were found abandoned near the Kolar dam, about 30 km from Bhopal. Trophies and skins of wild animals adorn the drawing rooms of at least 100 bureaucrats in the state.
Ironically, among those who have applied for registration of their trophies to the forest department is Prof Ramprasad, who, as former principal chief conservator of forests had headed the state forest department and was later appointed VC of Bhopal University.
DGP A N Pawar, former Bhopal mayor Dr Rajkumar Bisaria and former IAS officer C Dubey are among the 4,500 persons of the state those who have applied for the registration of their trophies and other remains of wild animals.
Make him a model: Nafisa
New Delhi, PTI: Salman Khan should be made the face of wildlife protection, said activist-cum-actress Nafisa Ali Sodhi at an art exhibition here. Salman’s real life experience will help in passing on the message that he has just been made an example, and it’s nothing but heart-breaking, Nafisa said.
