Lifeguards in Goa again
Goa’s beaches, a favourite with tourists, will now have lifeguards again, reports PTI from Panaji.
The state-government run Goa Tourism Development Corporation has decided to appoint 58 lifeguards on contract basis.
He said the corporation will map entire coastline dividing it into different zones before posting the lifeguards. Contrary to the earlier announcement, the state government has dropped the idea of having women lifeguards.
Goa’s beaches have been unmanned for more than a year now as lifeguards had struck work, demanding regularisation of their service.
Later, the government dismissed the striking guards.
Five get life-term for murder
A court sentenced five persons to life imprisonment for killing a man who objected to their using colour during Holi festival, reports PTI from Muzaffarnagar.
Additional district and sessions judge A K Pathak also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the accused.
According to prosecution, a shop-keeper, Bullan, was murdered and several others injured by the accused. This took place when they opposed using colour during Holi festival at Kandla town in the district on March 7, 2004.
Militants kill teacher
A school teacher was slaughtered by militants in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, reports UNI from Srinagar. The police said militants kidnapped a Rehbar-e-Taleem teacher Mohammad Yousuf Kallas from his house. Later, his throat slit body was recovered from the woods at Dunadoo.
A letter from Hizbul Mujahideen was recovered from the pocket of the deceased, police said.
