Experts from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) here advised the Arunachal Pradesh government on Tuesday to remain on high alert following a rare geological occurrence in which eruption of molten lava alongside the hill slope near Kimin village had triggered a panic.
A general alert has been issued as the geological occurrence, unheard of in the recent past, was first reported on August 21 from a hill slope, about 75 km north of the state capital Itanagar, GSI sources told the Deccan Herald. “Villagers witnessed a fire in the hill and afterwards the fire began spewing ash and sending debris down the slopes, like the molten magma of a volcano,” experts said quoting Papum Pare district magistrate Bidol Tayeng.
The intensity of the heat from the flying debris was so severe that the nearby high tension power tower has been completely melted. After the August 21 eruption, the site is presently lying dormant, but far from extinct the area continues to emit smoke and gas.
