Cabinet panel approves additional medical seats

The Cabinet sub-committee on medical education on Tuesday approved an increase of 50 seats each, in Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli and Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore.

The sub-committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa also gave its nod for an overall enhancement of 60 seats in the intake of post-graduate medical courses in various colleges.
Besides, the sub-committee gave its approval for a new private medical college — Subbaiah Medical College, Shimoga — and accorded permission to several colleges to start BPharma courses.
The sub-committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to the Medical Council of India (MCI) and if approved, will come into effect from the next academic year.
New engg college
For this year, the cabinet sub-committee cleared a new private engineering college — Maruthi Seva Samithi Engineering College, Bangalore.
 The seats will be added to the seat matrix and offered in the on-going casual vacancy round of seat selection process.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Medical Education Minister V S Acharya said as per the recommendations of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), the committee has approved an increase in intake in Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli and Vydehi College from 100 to 150.
As many as 60 PG medical seats for MD/MS and MPharm courses have been approved in six colleges including at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology.
Of the total medical seats, 24 seats will come under government quota.
Nursing course
He said Nitte Institute of Nursing has been allowed to offer MSc in nursing, Hi-Tech City College in Gulbarga has been allowed to offer BSc (Nursing). Adichunchanagiri College, SVT College and RR College (all from Bangalore) have been given permission to start MPharm courses and Basaveshwara College has been allowed to start the BPharma course.
Increase in salary
The committee decided to make a provision of Rs four crore per month in the supplementary budget to provide  salaries for faculty in government medical colleges.
Fees subsidy
Higher Education Minister D H Shankaramurthy said subsidy promised to candidates who had selected higher-fee engineering, medical and dental seats last year will be dispersed within a week.
Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will formally inaugurate the newly set up Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences on September 3.
