In keeping with the City’s tag of Silicon Valley, the City Railway station has now become the first in the country to provide internet access in its retiring rooms.
Platform One was made wi-fi enabled a couple of days ago. In layman language, this means that you can access the internet from here if you possess a laptop, a high-end mobile or a personal digital assistant—devices that come inbuilt with a wi-fi access card embedded inside. Passengers who opt to wait in the sleeper class, AC waiting lounge and the ‘The Mile Stone’, the posh AC retiring rooms on platform one can now spend their time here fruitfully by browsing or mailing.
Speaking to Metrolife, Divisional Railway Manager Mahesh Mangal said, “This has been done by RailTel Corporation of India Limited in association with Bangalore-based Pronto. Railways has decided to make 50–60 stations in the country wi-fi enabled and the beginning has been made at Bangalore.” The facility is open for passengers at the City Station but is yet to be formally launched, Mangal added.
K Manohar Raja, the joint general manager of Railtel said, “The charges to access the net are just Rs 35 per hour and the payment can be done only using a credit card right now. Coupons will be introduced in the near future.” This is an amenity for the public and not a venture aimed at making profit, he added.
Passengers are not yet aware of the facility and so are not carrying their laptops along right now. But once awareness spreads, it would become quite popular. Among the steps that would be taken to publicise it is a plan to handover pamphlets to all who check into the waiting rooms, Raja said.
Two wi-fi access points have been installed outside the sleeper class waiting room and the AC lounge to facilitate the process. RailTel network engineer Giri Prasad, who carried out a demonstration for Metrolife, said, “The signal strength will be very good upto 100 metres from the spot where the access point is located. The signals can penetrate through a single wall structure and so connection can be had in buildings above and below it.”
Elaborating on the technical aspect, Prasad said these points are wired to the existing RailTel Cyber Cafe on platform one and they were connected to RailTel Network Operations Centre. The next plan is to introduce wi-fi technology on platform six where Shatabdi trains arrive.
Work is also underway at New Delhi station now to make it wi-fi enabled.
