Chaklihallis green Brigade!
Aparna R.

Jakku, Takku, Mallu & Kallu donkeys were brothers. They had a shop in Hasiruhalli village called the "Jilebi shop". For purchases of over 200 Rs, the buyer got a compliment of a plate of delicious hot Jilebis in decorative mud pots.  The young ones always flocked to the shop for the big gleaming glass bottles  filled  with Chikkies, Coconut burfies, Mysore paks, Rava laddus, Ginger burfies & buns.
The chief minister, Hanka elephant came in a helicopter and told the sarpanch, "Your village looks like a savoury chakli from the sky". So the village was named Chaklihalli.
Hanka was offered hot Jilebis, fresh Chakklies and steaming masala tea in an earthen mug and leaf plate. Hooty then explained, "Sir, mud and leaves are natural and decompose easily. The hot Jilebis and Chakklies you have had in leaf plate and tea in mud cup will keep you healthy sir. But if you have the same item from a plastic tumbler and plate, it will harm our body sir. This is because plastic is carcinogenic, sir. It means food served in plastic will cause Cancer." Hanka was amazed by Hooty's knowledge. Hooty then said that it was Pinky, the panther, the scientist who had found this out.
Chaklihalli had been a very peaceful place earlier. They were happy with their beautiful forests, sparkling lakes and fragrant flowers. But suddenly Jakku and his brothers had become very mean. They had gone to the nearby city and purchased ready made biscuits, chocolates etc. and many other things covered with plastics & sold them. Due to this the village became very polluted. The forest was strewn with plastic wrappers and satchets. Pinky peacock was the forest officer. He buried the wrappers and carry bags in a pit and had dug it after three months. It had not turned into humus.
So Pinky was worried about the mounting plastic. Almost all the people in Chaklihalli avoided plastics, because it was non-biodegradable. The village had the reputation of being a very clean & Green village. But Takku and his brothers did not bother about these things. The families of Chaklihalli painstakingly made rectangular bags with old dupattas saris old bedsheets and pillow covers.
They had even made brown paper parcels bags and paper bags out of old news papers. They used these bags to buy grains, flour, vegetables and fruits. They took the paper bags to buy breads and other bakery items. All this they did to avoid pollution. But the four brothers continued to sell everything in plastic bags.
One day, Bompu monkey had gone to buy a loaf of bread from the Jilebi shop. Bompu asked for the bread to be packed in paper. Takku made a face and said "I feel so disgusted to pack it again. Just take it like this". Bompu felt very insulted. The same thing happened to Jingle deer, Betsy the buffalo and many others.
There was an urgent meeting in Hooty Sarpanch's house. Fanny fish had come to the edge of the river and told how twenty of her friends had died swallowing various plastic bags. Tinku squirrel also told, "Earlier we never had the problem of collecting garbage and disposing of it.’’
Pinky continued, "Yes sir! Tinku is right. Very soon Chaklihalli will be called Plastichalli. Hooty owl listened very patiently and they made a plan together.
It was a Sunday morning. Jakku, Mallu, Takku and Kallu were still asleep. They had a cook, Timby horse. Timby  also a nature lover tried to convince the brothers about not selling in plastic covers. But they never listened.
On Sunday the brothers woke up lazily and brushed their teeth. Takku shouted, "Hey! Timby, bring the puris and tea". The donkey brothers were so lazy that they closed their eyes and had their breakfast. They always bullied Timby who had been instructed by Hooty to do something.
Jakku banged the table and shouted for the puris. Timby came  pushing the trolley. The puris looked very delicious. Timby had garnished them with dollops of butter. The four of them gobbled the puris greedily. Then they realised it all tasted very funny. All of them spat it out. Takku thundered "You scoundrel Timby! Why are the puris so nasty?". The puris tasted so horrible because Timby had added plastic puree to the puri dough, curry and tea.
Takku spoke angrily, "Hey Timby! What nonsense is this? We will throw you out of the job". Timby then spoke very kindly, "Sirs, Please...you cannot eat this even a little. Can you imagine our friends, the fish and cows have died eating this. The main cause is your shop. You always sell things in plastic and not in jute or glass anymore. Plastic . will block our drains and poison the lakes, rivers, sea and ocean. The plastic bags will never get destroyed after 100 years. In another 10 or 15 years, we will have nothing to eat’’.
Jakku and his brothers then started a bakery and packed the cakes, biscuits and pastrie in Jute paper.  They now knew that by healing the Earth we are healing ourselves.
They also started a pickle unit, a milk diary and a chocolate factory. This provided jobs to many citizens and the nearby villagers also. Gradually Chaklihalli became Green and beautiful again. Thousands of trees were planted by the Jilebi shopkeeper brothers. So that, famous Chaklihalli became "High Oxygen Zone Village". It shone like a Green precious stone.
