Christ in a new avataar
Nina C George

Soorya Krishnamoorthy, an artist and choreographer par excellence is inspired by the quotidian and the commonplace. His plays are born out of the everyday experiences of simple people. He says his art has a conscience, a heart and a mind of its own.

"My art is not for sale, it is concern for the poor. I don't want to be a trader," Krishanamoorthy,a Keralite and founder of Soorya Stage and Film Society in Thiruvananthapuram, told Metrolife.

Krishnamoorthy is in the City to showcase his latest project entitled, 'My Saviour,' a biblical play on the birth, life, crucification and resurrection of Jesus Christ where Christ is portrayed as a simple human being who shares the joys and sorrows of ordinary men and women.

The Christ in Krishnamoorthy's play does not make the blind see and the lame walk, he only blesses and educates them to apply the existing policies and principles to see the truth.

In a free wheeling chat with Metrolife, Krishnamoorthy spoke about the play, its purpose and about its protagonist, called the Christ.

Christ as an ordinary man...

Christ was crucified for the good of humanity. He was born and lived to accept and take in all the pain. Christ was the son of God who died for us to live. This is the character and theme of the play.

About the cast...

There are 100 artists and none of them are trained artists. They are all very ordinary people. One of them is a small girl whose mother committed suicide, another character had to discontinue his education for want of money. These are real people who have experienced poverty, hunger and suffering at its worst.
I didn't have to put in much effort to train the cast because they understand pain and agony in its entirety.

Challenging set doctrines...

I wish to portray Jesus as an Asian in the play. There's something very Asian about the way he moves, talks and renders something. There's the Himalayas and the pahadi region that forms the backdrop in the play.

That Christ was influenced by India at some point has been incorporated very subtly. That all religion is one, is what I wish to convey.

Experiment with art...

I experiment with the human mind. In my dictionary, the word culture means not dance or music but concerns of the suffering. I partake of the sorrows of the lesser through my work.

The play is at St John’s Auditorium in Koramangala at 7 pm on August 3 and at St Claret College Ground in Jalahalli at 7 pm on August 5. For passes contact: 94480-51538 / 98451-56189.
