India's fielding coach Robin Singh said the team had been giving high priority to catching throughout the tour.
“We have been concentrating a lot on our catching. Most of the wickets are being taken by the medium-pacers, so we are working a lot on our catching. It is not easy to work with the players during a Test match because you want your players to be fresh for the match. I think what is important is that we have held all our catches and that is more important than ground fielding,” Robin said here on Thursday.
"We have been working a lot on our slip catching and it is quite crucial in this series. If you see the West Indies series earlier (against England), so many catches were dropped in the slips and it just changes the course of the game. What is important here is that we have held all our catches, and we have taken some good ones as well," he said.
“The overall fielding has improved. Some of the guys are on the older side; if you have a younger side, you will probably see a better fielding unit. We did well in the field in the one-dayers in Ireland," he added.
The former Indian all-rounder also supported wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has struggled to collect the ball cleanly. "I have spoken to Alec Stewart and most of the wicket-keepers here. I have spoken to Andy Flower, who gave his gloves up in a similar scenario. The is that Dhoni has not lost confidence, and has held all his catches. I think we should not dwell on the negatives. Indian cricket is going forward and it is important even from the press point of view that you also support the team," he said.
"In England, the ball swings a lot. Even their wicket-keeper was struggling a bit, so it is not only Dhoni, but also Matt Prior, who has been playing in English conditions for a long time," he added.
