Partner has proved to be this year’s blockbuster as there was no super hit film in the first half of this year. With the postponement of release of Cash from July 27 to August 3, Partner will enjoy uninterrupted cash collections in its favour the second week too. The magic combo of David Dhavan, Salman Khan and Govinda combined with the music, and timing of the film has worked.
Also the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had arrested the attention of masses, classes, kids and families alike despite schools re-opening and incessant rains. It is a sure earning proposition.
However, Tips Films' Naqaab, a Bobby Deol-Akhaye Khanna starrer, directed by Abbas Mastan duo could not make any significant impact and has proved a losing proposition not only for its distributors but also for exhibitors since Nimbus had bought the film at a very high price.
Meanwhile previous month’s last week releases Apne and Aap Ka Surroor are raking in moolah at the box-office even in second and third week of July. Awarapan may not have been a hit but it has done very good average business all over. While Aap Ke Surroor is definitely a hit film, the collection of Apne was little less. Animated My Friend Ganesha, Journey Bombay to Goa which had cramped Laughter Challenge artistes in this comedy film and Govinda starrer long time in the making, Jahan Jaaeyega Hamen Paayeyega were losing propositions. However, Journey Bombay to Goa has managed to do an average business.
Since Anil Kapoor’s Gandhi My Father has not generated much heat and may appeal to discerning audiences at the multiplexes, and the Dilip Kumar-Vyajayantimala starrer Naya Daur has not infused any craze for the coloured version, Cash is likely to ring in cash from the box-office without much competition.
With all said and done with the monsoon creating havoc in many parts of the country and more so in Western belt and floods in Assam affecting Bihar too, the collections of films will definitely affect. Only good strong films which have good new content will withstand the monsoon fury.
