Boy dies in borewell
A six-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a borewell, died on Sunday morning after a 46-hour operation failed to rescue him in Botlasunduram village in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, reports UNI from Ongole.

Kartik fell into the borewell while playing on Friday. His body was retrieved on Sunday, police said. Authorities had dropped an oxygen pipe and dug a parallel pit to save him but failed in their efforts. The government has announced an exgratia of Rs 70,000, 2.5 acres of land, a house and a government job to the child’s mother.

Pak scribe gets ‘emotional gift’
The daughter of famous Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz has received an emotional gift from Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in the form of her birth certificate from Shimla Municipal Corporation, reports PTI from Shimla. Faiz’s daughter Moneeza Hashmi, a journalist, was born in Shimla on August 22, 1946 when her parents visited the picturesque capital of the state.

The CM who took special interest told corporation’s officials to find her birth certificate through old records and then gave the certificate to her colleague Mirza for delivering it to her as a gift from him on her birthday later this month.

Temple closed over Dalits row
The 400-year-old Sri Draupati Amman temple here has been closed after talks failed between Hindus and Dalits over the latter’s entry into the shrine, PTI reports from Salem in Tamil Nadu.

The temple, maintained by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments was closed on Saturday “to maintain law and order and public tranquillity till the issue is solved”, official sources said. The administration had held talks with the disputed parties on Saturday, but no solution was reached, sources said.

Mild quake rocks Gujarat
A ‘slight’ intensity earthquake, measuring 3.6 on the Richter Scale, shook Gujarat’s Kachchh district on Sunday morning, reports UNI from New Delhi.

The temblor occurred at 7.28 am. There were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property.
