Majalakodi under water
DH News Service, Mangalore:
Apart from the rain water, the drainage water too added to the flood, creating a fowl smell in the area.

Some parts of Majalakodi near Pumpwell submerged in water following the heavy rains that lashed over Mangalore on Sunday.  Apart from the rain water, the drainage water too added to the flood, creating a fowl smell in the area. The residents of the area had no option but to live with the situation. About 15 houses in the region were inundate with water. Since most of the residents in this region are the poor and the Dalits, the locals complain that the incident only shows the negligence of the administration and its attitude towards the poor. The houses were inundated by 5 am and till afternoon the water level did not reduce.

“The situation was similar when heavy rains occurred last month but the water level subsided soon unlike this flood. If this situation persists how do we live then? Deputy Commissioner must visit the area and find a solution for this”, said Eshwar, a local resident.

In the same area, the toilet of one house collapsed. The water stagnated upto 2.5 feet in the road, cutting off the residents from other part of the region. The children could not attend school and to pacify hunger the residents depended on Hotel food.

The locals say that the drains in the region were filled and since there is no way for the rain water to flow, it has caused this artificial flood. They say that though the  matter was brought to Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao’s notice during last flood, nothing has been done so  far.

Assurances galore!
Seeing the situation, Jana Shikshana Trust director Krishna Moolya contacted District in-charge secretary Bharathlal Meena and informed him about the situation. Mr Bharathlal Meena assured to visit the place on August 10 to find a permanent solution for the problem. Even DC Maheshwar Rao assured to take up appropriate action to tackle the situation when contacted. Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Krishnappa Poojary visited the area and assured to solve the problem.
