Basavanagudi Aquatic Club’s Rahul Batra set the only meet record of the day, while his team-mate Sheraz Jason clinched two golds on the first day of the State Senior Aquatic Championships at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Club here on Monday.

With the event getting off to a sedate start due to a depleted field, Batra’s record-breaking show in the 50-metre butterfly event was the sole highlight. He did not have to exert too much en route to the gold, which came in a time of 26.12 seconds. The old mark was his own, at 26.87 seconds.

Batra, who is set to leave for the United Kingdom for further studies on a Rhodes Scholarship, may miss the Nationals even if he is named in the State team. Sanketh Bengre and Balaji MV, both from Jai Hind Swimming Club (Mangalore), finished second and third respectively.

Another swimmer to impress was Sheraz, who clinched gold in the 200 and 800M freestyle events. A 11th grade student in Calgary (Canada) here on vacation, Sheraz won the 200 gold in 2:04.2. KC Reddy Swim Centre’s Siddarth M and BAC’s Balaji MV stood second and third respectively.

In the 800M, Sheraz took gold in 8:57.18, way ahead of second and third-placed Gagan AP (BAC) and Balaji MV (BAC) respectively.
