Chairman of national selectors Dilip Vengsarkar termed the appointment of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the Indian captain of the Twenty20 World Cup as the right choice.
"I can't comment about the future. But he's good captaincy material. He's a good thinker of the game and he's in good form also, so he's the right choice," Vengsarkar said on Tuesday after a teleconference with other selectors back home to pick Indian team for the one-day NatWest Series against England and the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa.
On the inclusion of Munaf Patel for the NatWest Series, Vengsarkar said, “Munaf is in form, he's been playing well and he is playing a tournament at the KSCA. He is fit.”
The former Indian middle-order batsman refused to term the omission of Kerala pace bowler S Sreesanth from the one-day squad as a disciplinary measure.
"No, it's not a disciplinary measure. The selection is basically on form. He is out of the squad only for the one-dayers, but he'll be in the team for the Twenty20 World Cup
“I think it should spur him, now that he's not in the squad for the one-dayers. I think he'll do much better,” he said. There have been indications from the team management that Sreesanth, who has been off-colour so far, will play in the third Test at The Oval, beginning on Thursday.
On the return of Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan for the Twenty20 event, Vengsarkar said, "They've done well in the past, they're in form now and experience is very important. Pathan is bowling well in Africa. I spoke to Chandrakant Pandit and he is in good form. So he is back in the squad."
On resting left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan for the Twenty20 World Cup, he said, "Zaheer has a bruised heel and I think he'll require rest for about three weeks. That's the only reason he's out; he has asked for rest."
