Undeterred by Digvijay Singh’s plea to give up its “confrontationist” attitude against the Indian Cricket League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday maintained that it was against “money-making” ventures and would cooperate with those who promoted Test cricket.
“Test cricket is the real thing. It is the top level of the game and brings out the best in the players. We would be only happy if anyone does something for the sake of Test cricket. We will encourage it,” BCCI president Sharad Pawar told PTI here.
“But Twenty20 is for glamour. It can only bring in money,” he said, referring to Essel Group’s proposed Twenty20 tournament planned to be held in October.
Pawar, however, refused to directly respond to Digvijay Singh, Congress General Secretary, who wrote a personal letter to the Union Agriculture Minister on Monday.
“Instead of taking a confrontationist stand, you should act as a facilitator for the ICL to succeed,” Singh wrote to Pawar.
“I am sure the objective of the BCCI is not to make the millions but to popularise the game of cricket.
“I am sure you will prevail upon the hardliners in the Board and make them understand sentiments of millions of cricket lovers in India,” Singh said in his letter.
Pawar said the Board would not come in the way of retired players being associated with the game in whatever way they wanted.
“I had said in Bangalore a few days ago that those who have retired from cricket and pursue the game in whichever form we won’t come in the way,” he said.
