Vijaya Vidyalaya edge out FAPS
Vijaya Vidyalaya, Gulbarga, scored a narrow 2-1 win over Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) in the G S Randhawa Memorial inter-school hockey tournament in Bangalore on Tuesday.
Shivanand drew first blood for the winners in the eighth minute, while Sandeep scored the match-winner in the 43rd minute. Khalin had restored parity for FAPS in the 39th minute.
In another match, Azad School, Bellary, routed Ryan International School 14-0.
Maruthi’s four-goal effort was the feature of Azad’s victory. The striker scored in the eighth, ninth, 22nd and 25th minutes.
Pramod and Lakshman scored three goals apiece. While Pramod struck in the second, seventh and 34th minutes, Lakshman sounded the boards in the 11th, 17th and 19th minutes.
Hunner Swamy (29th and 30th minutes) and Rajesh (18th) and Babu (18th) were the other scorers for the Bellary outfit.
In an earlier encounter, Bangalore Military School scored a 2-0 win over ST Patrick’s School. Vikas Kalkae (14th) and Deepak Panwar (32nd) were on target.

SAI ‘D’ advance to second stage
SAI ‘D’ outclassed BEML 6-1 in a Pool ‘F’ match to become the first team to qualify for the Phase II quarterfinal league of the State ‘C’ division hockey league at the KSHA stadium on Tuesday.
Despite an excellent performance under the bar by BEML custodian Palangappa, SAI ‘D’ scored as they liked. Poonacha got them off the blocks in the 14th minute, and Deepak doubled his team’s advantage four minutes later. After Nayeemudin added a third in the 25th minute, Diwakar scored BEML’s only goal in the 40th minute.
As if stung by that strike, SAI ‘D’ regathered forces and launched another series of raids that resulted in three goals in the space of seven minutes. Naveen Kumar restored his team’s three-goal cushion in the 43rd minute, Poonacha netted his second a minute later and Pradhan Somanna rounded off the entertainment in the 49th minute.
Sripad annexes Open title
KV Sripad of Cognizant Technology Solution emerged triumphant in the Open category in the 20th monthly chess tournament conducted by the CV Raman Chess Club at the KNI Art Gallery.

The State badminton championship for under-10, under-13 and under-16 categories will begin at Dharwad and Hubli from August 17. PVB Engineering College and JG College of Commerce, Hubli will be the venues for the boys’ events while SDM Dental College, Dharwad, will host the girls’ matches.
