Holiday extended for schools in Kodagu
DH News Service, Madikeri:
Deputy Director for Public Instruction Mohommad M Basheer in a press release has directed the heads of all the institutions, including the institutions following central syllabus to declare holiday to the students as it is difficult for the students to come to school during the heavy rains.

All primary and high schools in the district will remain closed on Thursday owing to heavy rains that has been lashing over the past few days.

Deputy Director for Public Instruction Mohommad M Basheer in a press release has directed the heads of all the institutions, including the institutions following central syllabus to declare holiday to the students as it is difficult for the students to come to school during the heavy rains.

The details of the rainfall in various areas in the district over last 24 hours (in milli metres): Kutta- 62, Shrimangala-84.6, Ponnampete-90, Gonikoppalu-72, Virajpete-58.6, Somwarpete-57.2, Siddhapura-44.2, Napoklu-93.6, Kushalnagar-9.8, Madikeri-71, Harangi-18.8, Bhagamandala-125 and Talacauvery-178.6.

Loss
The district incurred a total loss of Rs 51.56 crores due to the heavy rains.

Though the rainfall reduced in Kodagu on Wednesday, the frequent flash of rains have not allowed the floods to subside. Several acres of cultivable lands have been innundated in Southern part of Kodagu, thereby adversely affecting the farmers.

Traffic disrupted
The road connectivity between Balele-Nittoor has been cut off after Lakshmanateertha river flooded. This is for the fifth time this year that the same road is being cut off. Even earlier, the people in the nearby region had faced lot of problems as in a year the road remained closed for over 27 days. Since this bridge road is a significant one for the nearby areas, the local residents have urged the government to take note of the situation and take up upgradation works of the connectivity road.

The overflowing of Lakshmanatheertha river too has resulted in the damage of paddy cultivations largely and in certain areas, compelling the farmers to re-plant the saplings.

DC’s visit
Deputy Commissioner K R Niranjan visited southern Kodagu regions which were affected by the floods. About 30 houses have collpased due to the heavy rains over last 24 hours.

With this, the number of houses damaged this year increased to 830.
