Floodgates of the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery river were opened on Wednesday to expel excess water and a flood alert has been issued in the area.
This is the second time in the last one month that the dam has been opened.
Due to the heavy inflow of water in the last few days, the dam was full to its maximum capacity of 93.4 tmcft around 12 pm, PWD Upper Cauvery Division Superintending Engineer N Subramanian said.
The surplus water was being released through the dam’s 16 floodgates, known as ‘Ellis Saddle’, he said.
The inflow to the dam was 28,366 cusecs and outflow 44,000 cusecs as per the readings taken at 11 am.
The dam had opened its sluice gates for release of water for irrigation purposes last month.
Karnataka, experiencing heavy monsoon rains, had been releasing surplus flood waters from its major dams into Cauvery.
