Indian skipper Rahull Dravid said on Wednesday that his had not envisage any situation other than a series-winning victory in final Test at The Oval.
"We haven't thought of any other situation than a decisive result. Look at the last two Test matches, nearly 360 or 340 overs were played. There was nearly a result at Lord's and there was a result at Trent Bridge. This one is probably going to be 450 overs of cricket and there should be a result. We are thinking of playing five days of good cricket here and hoping to be at the right side of the result,” Dravid told reporters.
"The challenge is to play the kind of cricket that we played at Trent Bridge. The need for our team is to back up the good performance with another good performance. It takes a lot to win Test matches, and it takes a lot more to win Test series. We will have to maintain the performance throughout the course of the series and that is quite difficult," he added.
The Bangalorean stressed on the importance of adapting to the different nature of The Oval pitch. “There is the question of adapting a little to the extra bounce. The Oval tends to be very good cricket pitch and there is something in it for everyone. If batsmen get set, it opens up a lot of back foot shots, it opens up front foot game. As a bowler you always have a chance, you get a bit of bounce," he said.
Onus on Kumble
The bouncem Dravid said, would assist Anil Kumble. "There will be something in it, hopefully a bit of bounce. If anything is on offer from the wicket, Anil is the best guy to utilise it. I think for Monty and Anil, there will be something as the game goes on. If Anil bowls well, that takes some of the burden off our young seamers. It makes a huge difference to the side.”
Dravid also played down a question about his own patchy form. "We have some good memories of this ground. I am taking my mind back to those memories to get some sort of inspiration. Four or five years have been passed since the last time we played here, and it is a new game. I am hitting the ball well. We are 1-0 up in the series and if the team is winning, that will not affect you that much. I am not worried, I will just go out and try my usual things."
On Sreesanth's omission from the one-day squad, he said, "Sreesanth is well prepared for this responsibility. I had a word with him; he will be disappointed if he is not picked for any team There are times when you are not going to get picked, and we want our players to be disappointed and go out and correct it. The worst kind of players are those who are happy about being dropped. I have no problems with players being disappointed. It helps them come back stronger and those are the sort of guys we want.”
