With a month left for the elections, the rumblings in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have come to the fore with Vice-President V Jagannath quitting his post, thus opening up the possibility of new alignments. Jagannath, who on Tuesday had said he would disclose the reasons behind his decision to resign from his post, was not available for comment on Wednesday. But the sudden exit of Jagannath, who for the last nine years has been associated with the ruling faction, is construed as a blow to Secretary Brijesh Patel, who will again lead his group at next month’s polls.
A key figure in the association, Jagannath was member of both the administrative and finance committees.
The State’s chief selector, Ashokanand, too has quit his post. First indications that Ashokanand, also an Executive Committee member, would step down came when the former State captain backed out from touring Australia with a KSCA team for the Emerging Players’ tournament last month.
While Patel confirmed having received Jagannath and Ashokanand’s resignations, he dismissed reports that association treasurer Sadanand Maiya too had quit.
With the elections likely to be held on September 9, the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar-led alliance is obviously upbeat at the latest developments in the association. Wadiyar is aspiring to become the association president, and his aspirations received a boost late last month with liquor-baron Vijay Mallya throwing his weight behind him.
