Ushering in the festive spirit
On December 2, the quiet corner between Da Costa Layout and Banaswadi Main Road in Cooke Town was filled with the melodious sound of Christmas Carols.
Organised by Asian Trading Corporation, the scheduled programme was to start from 6 pm but it was clearly noticeable that the evening was going to have a bigger crowd than expected. Priests, nuns, religious, laity, students and passers-by were filling the seating arrangement on either side of the stage. The abundance of the evening was enhanced by the presence of boys from the nearby orphanage and students of the school for the blind.
The "Voices of Abundance", a professional group of singers, had already arrived and the crowds, with bated breath, could not wait for the thrill and chill of the evening. At 6.30 pm, the choir members, dressed in black and red with Christmas caps, burst into the festive spirit.
The programme started with a prayer by Monsignor T S Amruthraj, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Bangalore.
The crisp message by Father Adolf Washington elevated the crowds to a new level of participation.
The evening was alive with the enthralling music of the Voices of Abundance, led and conducted by Martin and Colleen Rebeiro, well known both in India and abroad.
Nigel Fernandes, Chief Executive, Asian Trading Corporation, Bangalore thanked its patrons.

Awareness programmes
Oasis organises series of awareness programmes in Basaveshvara Nagar slum on December 2, to celebrate the spirit of International Volunteer Day
The spirit of the International Volunteers Day dates back to 1985 when the United Nations General Assembly declared December 5 as an annual celebration of voluntary action by people, NGOs, communities and governments of the world. It is a day when we all should reach out to everyone and contribute our bit towards the society.
The main event of the day was a rally in the slum. The rally began amidst drum beats and anti tobacco and anti alcohol slogans. Some volunteers dressed in white, carried a dummy dead body garlanded with empty cigarette and tobacco packets. Also participating in the rally were 15 children of standard VII of Shane Guruban Halli school. As a part of the rally, skits addressing various social issues like tobacco and alcohol abuse and child labour were performed.
The volunteers also visited homes of slum residents to understand the real problems faced by them.
